If you find a few hairs clogging your shower drain, you might wonder if your shampoo can do more for you.

Hair loss is common, but it can be frustrating. There are many reasons for hair loss. Finding the cause behind it is the best way to help prevent it or manage it better.

A doctor or qualified dermatologist can help you determine what’s going on. But in the meantime, using a mild shampoo can help keep your scalp happier, says the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).

We’ve rounded up the best natural shampoos for hair loss and answered some of your questions about the products and how they work.

Scroll through our vetted options to find the best natural hair loss shampoo for your hair type and budget.

What is natural shampoo?
Natural shampoos use almost all natural, organic or natural ingredients. Some of these products may use both natural and synthetic ingredients.

There is limited regulation of cosmetic products such as natural shampoos. Therefore, you, the consumer, should carefully read the ingredients list and decide for yourself which option is more “natural” than the others.

Natural shampoos are generally plant-based and leave out harsh chemicals like parabens, synthetic fragrances, and sulfates.

Although sulfates can be very harsh on your hair, according to a 2015 review, they are a key ingredient in regular shampoos. Getting a sulfate-free shampoo means trading sulfates for other similar chemicals. This means that the shampoo does not lather as easily.

In general, choosing a natural shampoo takes some getting used to. However, it’s worth noting that some of the natural hair loss shampoos on our list are sulfate-free, but they get rave reviews for their foaming ability.

How natural shampoos help with hair loss
Try to avoid natural shampoos and synthetic ingredients in general. A natural shampoo for hair loss will take several steps.

These shampoos contain natural ingredients that can slow down hair loss or thicken hair altogether.

For example, one popular natural remedy for hair loss is saw palmetto. This extract is obtained from the fruit of a palm tree that is common in the southeastern United States.

This ingredient helps your hair grow thicker because of how it affects the sex hormone testosterone, also known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT) or androgens.

In general, DHT is known to produce certain characteristics such as increased muscle mass, deepening of the voice, and ultimately hair loss.

More research is needed, but a promising 2020 review found that saw palmetto can reduce DHT levels, improve hair growth, and clear clogged hair follicles. Specially formulated DHT inhibiting shampoos are also available.

Another natural ingredient for hair loss is pumpkin seed oil. This oil has the ability to increase hair growth by preventing the formation of DHT from testosterone. More research is needed on this natural ingredient, but a small, early study shows the effectiveness of taking 400 milligrams a day for 24 weeks. Study participants noticed a 40 percent increase in hair growth.
