What causes a double chin?
A double chin, also known as submental fat, is a common phenomenon that occurs when a layer of fat builds up under your chin. A double chin is often associated with weight gain, but not necessarily being overweight. Loose skin caused by genetics or aging can cause a double chin.
If you have a double chin and want to get rid of it, there are a few things you can do.
Exercises for the double chin
Although there is no scientific evidence that chin exercises help with a double chin, there is anecdotal evidence.
Here are six exercises to help tone and tighten the double chin muscles and skin. Unless otherwise indicated, repeat each exercise several times a day. Always check with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.
- Straight jaw
Tilt your head back and look at the ceiling.
Push the lower jaw forward and feel the stretch under the chin.
Count to 10.
Relax your chin and return your head to a neutral position.
- Ball exercises
Place a 9-10 inch ball under the chin.
Press your chin down against the ball.
Repeat several times daily.
