Asking for breakfast at certain places in central Madrid without checking the price first can be an unpleasant surprise when it comes to paying. So much so that the food is indigestible or your guts churn with indignation.
Something similar happened to the Asturian journalist Paz Alvarez when consuming a single coffee, a tortilla stick and a cane in the bar of La Primera, a bar at number 1 on Gran Vía.
The account amounted to 14.10 euros and it included 2.30 euros for bread, which the customer, although she had not ordered or eaten, was billed to her “mandatory”, according to the explanations Álvarez received from the restaurant staff.
Complaining via Twitter about what had happened to her turned the journalist’s anger into one viral anecdote thanks to social networkswith the label #elpanesobligatorio as a flag of what happened.
The tweet garnered more than 2,500 retweets, more than 5,000 likes, and sparked a lengthy discussion about it in the post’s comments.
